Van Gogh Terrace of a Cafe at Night: 500-Piece Puzzle
Vincent van Gogh used an array of colors to articulate the lamplit patio of a café in Arles, France, turning the traditional nighttime painting in shades of black and gray on its head. While many nocturnal paintings of the time were sketched during the day, he wrote in a letter to his sister about this piece, “I enormously enjoy painting on the spot at night.” In fact, Van Gogh painted the constellations just as they appeared in the sky; the positioning has been traced by astronomers to September 16 or 17, 1888.

Hilma af Klint Birthday Card Set
These unique birthday cards feature The Dove, No. 2 by Swedish artist Hilma af Klint (1862–1944). The message inside reads, “Happy Birthday!” An artist both of her time and well ahead of it, Hilma af Klint was a rare original. Years before Modernist pioneers Mondrian and Kandinsky dipped into abstraction, af Klint broke ground with colorful, energetic compositions that veered away from the figurative. Influenced by spiritualism, she tried to reconcile art, science, and religious pluralism through her paintings. Determining that the world wasn’t ready, she decreed that her work—now celebrated—not be exhibited until twenty years after her death.
